Mahitaji — notes

I was taking an on-line course in writing science fiction, which was followed by a delightful week of the University of Wisconsin’s Write By The Lake writer’s workshop. I signed up for the science fiction segment of that as well. I wrote this story for the on-line course, although I wasn’t really sure it qualified as science fiction. I was assured that it did, and brought it to the workshop to be critiqued. The people who read it liked it, and the main suggestion (which I never got around to) was to have one less offspring to begin with. They also said I was very good at writing the sort of letter that the story opens with! Um, yeah — I did that for many years when I worked at the Haven!
